Our Story
We are Gabriel Suárez and Mayra Becerril, two Mexicans born in Morelia, Michoacán. We have three beautiful daughters born in Minnesota. We arrived in Minnesota at the age of 19 in 1998, newly married, like many others seeking the American dream. We started working in the restaurant industry and did so for many years until 2013 when our youngest daughter fell ill with cancer (leukemia). I, Mayra, had to stop working to take care of her and our other two daughters. Those were very difficult times. We barely survived on Gabriel’s salary, so I looked for ways to help at home and started making homemade cakes and jellies. Little by little, people began recommending me, and I realized that I was good at baking.
In 2018, we started volunteering at an organization called “God Never Dies,” which was dedicated to raising funds to help sick people or the families of deceased individuals. It was a beautiful cause. Gabriel and I provided everything needed to make crepes on the spot, and all the proceeds went to the organization. We were a big hit at the charity events, which were held at Plaza del Sol in Saint Paul. The owner of the plaza was one of the people who most encouraged us to start this business. I still remember her words: “Go for it, you’ll do well, everything you make is delicious.” We didn’t have much money to start the business, but she not only motivated us but also lent us part of the kitchen equipment we needed. That’s how we began.
We were only at Plaza del Sol for a year before we started looking for another place, as the plaza was being sold. That’s how we arrived at Maplewood Mall, where we opened in October 2019. Everything was going wonderfully, but in February 2020, COVID-19 hit, and everything came crashing down. We closed for three months, but thanks to God, we are still here. It’s not easy having a business; it has been very demanding and sacrificial, but we keep fighting for our dreams. Every time we hand over a crepe or a waffle and see the happiness on our customers’ faces, we say it’s all been worth it, and that motivates us even more to keep doing things better.
